Is Astrology Divination? And Why it Matters - with Hal White

  • Tranzac Club 292 Brunswick Avenue Toronto, ON, M5S 2M7 Canada (map)

For years the famed British astrologer Geoffrey Cornelius promoted the idea that astrology is divination and considered the ramifications of that perspective for natal, horary, and rectified charts, among others. The opposite approach, the scientific one which is almost as ancient, holds that planets are causes. So are your life changes based on causes--what the planets made you do or influenced you to do--or are they non-causal? What would a NON-causal approach look like in practice? Can signifiers--without causal influence--help you better understand your life? This alternative approach lets you see charts—and life-- through a new lens.  Of course, the ‘new lens’ and Cornelius’ ‘new ideas’ have ancient roots in the Neoplatonic philosophers of the third century CE, and before them, the Babylonians.

About Hal

Hal White was one of the founders of the first organized astrology group in Toronto, set up after the first astrology conference here, arranged by Robin Armstrong in 1974. Hal was the first Chairperson of the Toronto Guild, a group that functioned for over ten years before morphing into Astrology Toronto. The Guild, during this period, featured speakers such as Robert Hand, Charles Harvey, and Baldur Ebertin. A student of Philosophy (B.A. Princeton U.), Hal has sought to link astrology to mainstream academic areas such as philosophy and psychology. He has spent many years studying these adjacent fields, and was one of the first few Toronto astrologers (Priscilla Costello, Julie Simmons) to get an advanced degree in a related area;  for Hal, counselling (M. Ed. U f T). He spoke at some of the earliest conferences put on by such organizations as NCGR.
